Parihoa

I’ve talked about my current life amidst the stunning mountains of Wanaka, New Zealand – a world away from my former city life.  Too many years in Singapore's crowded, high-octane environment had totally drained me, literally sending me running for the hills!

While Parihoa Farm was my initial haven, offering a stark contrast to my Singapore life, the mountains surrounding Wanaka have truly become my sanctuary. I'm now immersed in a vibrant health-focused community and surrounded by breathtaking views – a perfect environment for nurturing my mental wellbeing.

Creating the Parihoa Network required a peaceful, expansive environment – a big open space that fostered serenity and calmness. This allowed me to start rebuilding and rediscovering my purpose. Initially, I was uncertain about pursuing my vision, but its clarity and potency wouldn't let me ignore it. Those around me shared my conviction, and as the right support network of employees, friends, and like-minded individuals formed, I knew I was ready to move forward.

It's been two and a half years since I sold ChapmanCG and most of my Life 1 interests. I needed time to recharge, refocus, and reconnect with myself. I took a deliberate break, clearing my calendar, and distancing myself from the relentless demands of constant digital engagement. I needed space to simply “be”.

The depression I experienced – and occasionally still do – as I transitioned from my former corporate identity to my authentic self was incredibly challenging. I've shared my journey openly, hoping to reassure those struggling to redefine themselves from Life 1 to Life 2: you're not alone. At the heart of the Parihoa Network lies a guiding principle: 'always connected'. This mantra is even tattooed on my arm, serving as a constant reminder of our vision.

Recently, I've rekindled a passion from my 20s – ultra marathon running. Completing 250km desert races not only tested my physical limits but also freed my mind. Through these challenges, I met inspiring individuals and discovered a sense of balance between my work and personal life. Running gave me a renewed sense of purpose and vitality.

My entrepreneurial journey diverted my energy from running to business. My passion for running waned, but I maintained fitness through gym workouts and various activities. In 2020, I planned a comeback, setting my sights on the Snowman Race across the Himalayas, an event I co-founded. After intense summer training, I achieved my best form ever at 43. However, COVID-19 intervened, forcing the race's cancellation. By the time it resumed in 2022, I was burnt out and couldn't participate.

I've been waiting for the perfect moment to revive my ultra-running passion. Now, at 48, I'm seizing the opportunity, aligning it with the Network's launch. This new chapter will reunite me with my love for running, revitalizing my physical and mental wellbeing.

Throughout my life, I've been fortunate to meet incredibly inspiring individuals. These encounters significantly influenced my future entrepreneurial path, as I often drew parallels between pushing myself mentally and the physical challenges I'd overcome. I'm confident many athletes and adventurers would echo this sentiment, recognising similar synergies between mental and physical resilience.

Most importantly, I discovered that staying active was the best thing for me. Getting off the couch, immersing myself in nature, and disconnecting from devices (even back then) had a profound impact. I realised, even in my 20s, that finding balance and taking breaks from daily life was transformative. Whenever I returned to the real world, I'd be refreshed and revitalised, with a newfound perspective.

My comeback event of choice is the aptly named Southern Lakes Ultra, a 260km multi-stage ultra-marathon that weaves through the majestic mountains of Southern New Zealand. Virtually on my doorstep, this iconic course will take me on a breathtaking journey, navigating pristine and rugged landscapes that will test my limits.

Creating the Parihoa Network feels like running an ultra-marathon – an enduring pursuit that demands balance, adaptability, and perseverance. As we journey towards wellbeing, we're continually refining our pace, seeking equilibrium, and optimising our lives.

Whether it’s an ultra, a marathon, or something shorter—it doesn’t really matter. What truly matters is setting a goal, committing to it, and embracing the journey. The discipline required – from gearing up and fuelling your body to navigating the elements and cultivating mental toughness – holds profound lessons on where meaning is derived in challenges like these.

As I grow the Parihoa Network, I'm driven by a vision: achieving success without sacrificing our vitality. I believe we can reach our goals while nurturing our physical strength and wellbeing. Join me on this journey as we redefine success together.
