From Entrepreneur to Visionary Custodian: Matthew Chapman’s Parihoa Legacy

For the past decade, I have had the privilege of being the custodian of Parihoa, one of New Zealand’s most remarkable hubs for wellbeing. Parihoa transcends the definition of a home or property; it's a way of thinking, an energy, a feeling deeply rooted in the essence of Middle Earth, infused with breathtaking architectural and environmental beauty. Translating to "the friendly cliffs," Parihoa has served as a gathering place for thousands of wellbeing-oriented friends and creatives from New Zealand and beyond. Often likened to a blend of Soho Farmhouse and the “Esalen of New Zealand,” Parihoa embodies the transformative spirit of the West Coast.

As part of my commitment to simplifying my life, I’ve decided that 2025 will mark Parihoa’s next chapter. I will transition this extraordinary, multi-dimensional property to a new custodian. To share more about this decision, I sat down with Parihoa’s inaugural Creative-in-Residence and friend Raymond Braun for my most wide-ranging and candid interview yet. I reflect on what initially drew me to Parihoa, my experiences as its custodian, and why I believe now is the time to introduce fresh energy and vision.

Parihoa has been the setting for my personal transformation—from what I lovingly call “Life 1” to “Life 2.” The leap from being a global entrepreneur living in a small condo in Singapore to managing a sheep farm in New Zealand has been nothing short of a metamorphosis. This journey of reinvention taught me invaluable lessons, and I hope it inspires those who are dreaming of redefining their own lives.

For the future custodian, Parihoa offers unparalleled potential. It could evolve into a signature New Zealand estate, a world-class wellbeing center, or any number of visionary possibilities. With 4 kilometers of dramatic cliff-front West Coast ocean views, it is one of the largest private landholdings in the West Auckland area. While I’ve poured my heart and energy into enhancing and nurturing Parihoa, it remains a place ripe for continued innovation and creativity.

Sharing Parihoa with others has been an immense privilege. One of the most meaningful collaborations has been with my dear friend, the extraordinary Kiwi artist Kristina Webb. In 2024, Kristina founded the aptly named Metamorphosis wellbeing community at Parihoa. This inspiring collective of hundreds of creative, wellbeing-focused individuals has hosted three signature gatherings—Winter, Spring, and Summer. I look forward to witnessing the “butterfly effect” of this community as their wellbeing curriculum continues to evolve.

As I enter my final year with Parihoa, I invite you to be a part of its story. Whether you’d like to visit, participate in our programs, or even know someone who might be its next custodian, I’d love to hear from you. The door of Parihoa is open.
